We knew when we booked a room that the hotel needs a pick me up in places so we knew what to expect.....pleasant staff everywhere...drinks were nice...breakfast was lovely.....the room we had was 404 which looked a bit wonky, so after a phone call to my Architect mate he advised me to do the roll a polo mint test on a piece of furniture in the room...( sugar free polo mint I may add .....healthy eating etc etc)...I did the test and the polo mint rolled downwards on the table which confirmed the sloping room.....we could hear noise from the adjoining rooms though, at first i though someone was inside our wardrobe but it was from the next room.....nice nights sleep though...the night before, the wind, rain and arctic temperatures outside were really bad ,I'm sure we saw a few polar bears with coats on......and almost on this cold night we also saw a few people wearing their novelty animal themed wooly hats...I dont blame them as it was really cold and made us smile....all in all we were made welcome ,all the staff were polite and helpful.....I know the hotel is in need of some updates , nothing can can be brand spanking new all the time....but it was a pleasant 1 night stay...Cheers to all at the Royal Hotel and hopefully the weather will be better next time we visit...Thank you

Ok so first of all prepare yourself to be taken to the past with this one. It's true that this Hotel has its glory days past it. That being said if you like (or don't mind) this retro look, the Royal Hotel can charm you. THE STAFF - if you need anything or anything bothers you let them know. The old receptionist is very caring - I needed to sign out before breakfast and he make sure I'll have a bag of goodies waiting. THE BAR/RESTAURANT - stays open even after bar closes; you can find there a local group of 60-80 old native Scottish gents and ladies happy drinking - they are very charming! My room had a BATHTUB, that alone was a nice treat!

Location is excellent, central to the town and close to the harbour, distillery, shops, and restaurants. Breakfast was traditional buffet style, with a good selection of hot and cold food. Scottish classics (haggis, black pudding, etc.) were of course available. Overall quality was very good. Staff were friendly, and helpful.

The staff were friendly staff, the hotel is central for shopping amenities and the ferry terminal. It had an entertainer playing accordian on Saturday evening. The breakfast buffet was ample with a selection of hot and cold options, was very tasty! Rooms were tired looking but clean.
